Face covering, mask, respirator, N95, KN95 – these are terms that have become common during the current pandemic and are often used interchangeably and sometimes incorrectly. Companies that had no experience with respiratory protection may now find themselves in a position where they are required to comply with the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard. The requirements may now apply due to choices they have made regarding “face coverings” provided to employees with the intent of protecting them from COVID-19. Companies who previously used respiratory protection, and found themselves struggling to obtain the make, model, style and sizes they had been using, may find themselves out of compliance with OSHA regulations.
OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard 29 CRF 1910.134 requires: a written program, a medical evaluation process, training and fit testing. Employees must pass a fit test with the size, make, model and/or style of respirator they are required to wear on the job.
